Agulhas

DESCRIPTION

A small bowled ridge overlooking the southernmost point of Africa. If you’ve come all the way to smell the southern sea, it would be a shame not to drive up the hill to see if it was flyable. Works best in the afternoon. If the wind is WSW, there is a smaller ridge that is flyable in strong wind about 2km from the lighthouse. Drive West on the gravel coast road until you see the grassed dunes.

WIND

South to South West

ALTITUDE

70m, within Overberg FAR (Bredasdorp).

LAUNCH

below the crest of the road, cleared area

LANDING

if you get up you can topland or land on the public grassed area bordering the sea. If you’re low find an open plot (selling fast) or a safe strip of road near the ridge.

DIRECTIONS

N2 to Caledon, turn right and head for Agulhas/Struisbaai. Drive through Struisbaai. Just after you enter Agulhas, turn right up the tarred road which goes to the radio mast. You’ll see the lighthouse below and to the right of the launch site.

CARETAKER

Public access to the viewsite seems to be unrestricted.
